Union Saint-Gilloise vs Malmo
UEFA Europa League
Date: 15 September 2022, Thursday
Kick-off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Stade Joseph Marien (Bruxelles).
Union Saint-Gilloise made a huge upset on their debut in the UEFA Europa League seven days ago by beating German Bundesliga side Union Berlin 0-1 on the road.
The team led by Karel Geraerts stunned the Germans with a phenomenal defensive display last Thursday, limiting them to just eight attempts in total in the 90 minutes of play.
The Belgians now have a great opportunity to make another big step towards the knockout stage of the competition as they play host to Malmo in the second round this Thursday at 21:00.
Malmo are arguably the weakest team in this group. They did not offer anything in an easy 0-2 defeat to Sporting Braga on the opening day.
The Portuguese outfit controlled the game throughout the whole 90 minutes to eventually claim the win with a goal in each half.
It will, however, be interesting to see how Union Saint-Gilloise’s defense will perform here knowing the Belgians have not been quite sound at the back at the beginning of the new First Division A season.
Union Saint-Gilloise have already shipped 13 goals in the inaugural 8 outings in the domestic league. They allowed seven goals in the last three league outings.
On another note, Malmo are also struggling to find the right form even in their Allsvenskan. This is why, after all, they decided to make a managerial change, appointing Age Hareide as the new head coach seven days ago.
Hareide debuted with a narrow 2-1 win over struggling Norrkoping on Sunday, helping Malmo snap their three-game slide in the domestic league.
Union Saint-Gilloise did leave a much better impression on the opening day, but we feel Malmo are heavily underestimated here. The visitors could show a new-manager bounce and we would not be shocked to see them even beating the Belgians here.
The value is enormous with Malmo to win at the 6.50 odds knowing that Union Saint-Gilloise do not possess enough experience in the continental competitions. We also find value in backing goals at both ends at the 2.00 odds.
